Voices of Impact: Women Leading Sustainable Change - Episode 2
Marina El Khawand - E3 - Founder, Medonations, Lebanon
Marina El Khawand was 18 years old when the Beirut port explosion killed more than 200 people and destroyed an entire capital in a matter of seconds.
Seven days later, she walked alone into a building marked as a danger zone in a neighbourhood called Karantina. Inside, she found an elderly woman clutching a ripped box of medication she could no longer find anywhere in the city. That afternoon became the founding story of MedDonations, now operating across 65 countries and credited with saving over 25,000 lives.
In this conversation, she takes us back to that seventh day. The old woman on the wooden chair, the ripped box of medication, and the whispered sentence in Arabic that became the founding moment of MedDonations.
She also speaks about why grassroots action moves faster than governments ever will. And what burnout taught her about building something that can outlast you.
"In between the rubbles, we found hope."
This conversation was recorded for Voices of Impact, a series by Hear Her Stories in partnership with the Journalists and Writers Foundation.
